SAD is seasonal affective disorder and shows up in the autumn around clock changes and we have less daylight. It usually lifts in the spring and summer with longer daylight hours.

Symptoms usually build up slowly in the late autumn and winter months. Symptoms may include sadness, lowering of mood, poor sleep, poor concentration, poor appetite, irritability, sadness, tearfulness, social isolation, lack of energy and motivation.

There is no real test for SAD, and an assessment by your physician is performed to determine.

Light therapy- a light bulb that mimics daylight, antidepressant medications and talk therapy can be effective. Also, taking long walks during the daylight hours and getting exercise can improve mood for a minimum of 30 mins a day.

Left untreated a person will develop further symptoms of depression and will become more difficult to treat.
